Coolum Beach Sports Precinct Concept Plan

Creating a Future-Ready Sporting Hub for AFL & Netball

Coolum Beach Sports Precinct Project

Urbankind were engaged by Sunshine Coast Council to develop a visionary Site Concept Plan for the future home of the Coolum Breakers Junior AFL Club and an expanded Coolum District Netball Association facility.

This project represents a critical step towards delivering high-quality community sporting infrastructure that fosters participation, inclusivity, and long-term sustainability.

Project Overview

📍 Location: Coolum Beach, Sunshine Coast, QLD
🏗 Scope: Concept planning for a permanent junior AFL and netball facility
🤝 Key Stakeholders: Sunshine Coast Council, Coolum State High School, AFL Queensland, Coolum Breakers Junior AFL Club, Coolum District Netball Association, Department of Education Queensland

Project Outcomes

Future-Proofed Facility Design: A shared multi-sport clubhouse, one senior AFL-compliant oval, and eight netball courts aligned with national facility standards.
Strategic Land Use & Tenure Planning: Facilitating agreements between Sunshine Coast Council and Queensland Department of Education to secure long-term use of the site.
Stakeholder-Driven Approach: In-depth engagement with clubs, schools, and governing bodies to ensure the facility meets the evolving needs of the community.
Investment-Ready Concept Plan: A QS-ready (quantity surveyor-ready) concept plan to guide future funding, advocacy, and master planning efforts.

Why it Matters

🔹 Addresses critical facility shortages for AFL and netball in Coolum Beach
🔹 Supports grassroots sports growth, particularly for junior and female participation
🔹 Enhances community connectivity through inclusive and accessible design
🔹 Positions the precinct as a priority site for future AFL Queensland investment

Looking Ahead

This concept plan is just the beginning. Sunshine Coast Council and sporting stakeholders will now progress to securing funding and detailed design, ensuring the project becomes a reality.

In October 2024 the newly elected Queensland government committed $5million to the project.
